AIRFUSE-SAW: All-Iron Redox Flow Utility for Sustainable Energy: Phase 2 – Solar, Arbitrage and Wind Integration

Project Summary

AIRFUSE-SAW advances the development of a 100 kW / 1 MWh All-Iron Redox Flow Battery for long-duration energy storage (LDES), building on the successful 12.5 kW / 75 kWh Phase 1 pilot at KNESS Group in Ukraine. The project will validate the technology for renewable energy integration, energy resilience and commercial deployment across Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Challenge

Ukraine needs resilient energy infrastructure capable of integrating rapidly growing renewable generation. Existing storage technologies can face limitations including short duration, degradation, high cost, toxicity and safety risks. AIRFUSE-SAW addresses this gap by developing a scalable, long-duration storage solution using abundant iron-based chemistry.

Innovation

The project is developing an All-Iron Redox Flow Battery for safe, durable and cost-effective energy storage. The system targets more than 25,000 cycles without capacity fade, 70% DC/DC round-trip efficiency and a 50 mA/cm² current density. Its high-surface-area electrode design and CFD-optimised hydraulics support improved performance, while low-cost, non-flammable iron-based chemistry makes it well suited to large-scale energy storage.

Impact

Avoid 80+ tonnes of CO₂ annually per deployed system through renewable energy integration.
Improve energy resilience, enable renewable energy shifting and increase energy autonomy.
Reduce energy costs, unlock renewable capacity and accelerate deployment of long-duration energy storage across Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
